A thesis that takes a clear, defensible position
Many GP essays lose marks in the very first paragraph by hedging so much that the marker can't identify a clear stance. A strong thesis takes a defensible position while acknowledging the question's complexity, rather than trying to agree with every possible viewpoint at once.
Each paragraph argues one idea, in depth
Weaker essays list several loosely related points without developing any of them fully. Stronger essays commit to fewer points, each developed with a specific example, a clear explanation of why it supports the thesis, and an acknowledgment of its limits.
Real examples beat generic ones
Vague references to "studies show" or "many people believe" carry little weight. Specific, well-chosen examples, whether current affairs, historical events or credible statistics, demonstrate the kind of informed reading that GP markers are trained to reward.
Counter-arguments strengthen an essay, they don't weaken it
Addressing the strongest opposing view and explaining why the essay's position still holds shows more mature argumentation than ignoring it. This is one of the clearest differences between a Band A and Band C essay at A-Level.
