Wolfie and the Schoolyard Mystery, Part 2: The New Best Friends
Joshua has a talent for turning anything into an adventure, and slowly, Caleb finds the courage to try things he never thought he could.
"Waaah…"
Monday mornings were still difficult.
Caleb stood quietly outside the school gate, clutching the straps of his school bag.
Children streamed past him in groups. Some chatted excitedly. Some raced one another towards the parade square. Others laughed so loudly that the sound echoed across the school grounds.
Caleb watched them. A familiar ache settled inside his chest. He missed Grandma.
At home, Grandma always knew exactly what to say. At school, everything still felt new. Everything felt big.
"CALLEEBBB!"
A voice boomed across the courtyard. Several children turned. Caleb looked up.
Joshua was running towards him at full speed. His tie was crooked. His hair looked as though he had wrestled with a tornado. One shoelace had already come undone.
Joshua skidded to a stop. "You came!"
Caleb blinked.
Joshua grinned. "Good. Now I don't have to eat recess alone."
Something warm spread through Caleb's chest. It was a strange feeling. Small. Comforting. The sort of feeling that made school seem a little less scary.
Together, the boys walked towards their classroom. For the first time since Primary One started, Caleb wasn't walking alone.
The days passed quickly. Joshua had a remarkable talent. He could turn almost anything into an adventure.
A trip to refill a water bottle became an expedition. Collecting worksheets became a secret mission. Even feeding the fish in the school pond somehow felt exciting whenever Joshua was involved.
Caleb spent most of his time laughing.
Teacher Laura noticed the change immediately. One afternoon, she watched the boys from across the school garden. The quiet child who used to sit alone now smiled almost every day.
The difference wasn't dramatic. The difference was something much more important. Caleb looked happy.
Beside her, Wolfie stretched lazily beneath a tree. The husky followed Teacher Laura's gaze. His tail began swishing against the grass. He noticed it too.
Recess soon became the highlight of every school day. Joshua always had a new idea. One week they searched for interesting insects. Another week they built tiny boats from fallen leaves and raced them along a drain after the rain.
Whenever Wolfie joined them, the game usually ended in chaos.
One Tuesday, Joshua carefully built a tower using empty drink cartons. The structure stood proudly on the bench. Three levels high. Balanced perfectly.
The boys admired their masterpiece. Wolfie admired it too. A little too closely. His nose nudged the bottom carton. The entire tower collapsed. Cartons flew everywhere.
Wolfie stared at the mess. The husky slowly looked away. As though he had absolutely nothing to do with it.
Joshua burst out laughing. Caleb laughed so hard his stomach hurt. Even Teacher Laura struggled to keep a straight face.
A few weeks later, Joshua discovered something shocking. Caleb had never played football before.
"Never?" Joshua repeated.
Caleb shook his head.
Joshua looked horrified. "Not even once?"
Another shake of the head.
Joshua placed both hands on his hips. "This is a serious problem."
Caleb stared. "A serious problem?"
"A very serious problem." Joshua pointed dramatically towards the school field. "We must fix this immediately."
Five minutes later, Caleb regretted agreeing.
Children were running across the field. Footballs flew in every direction. The noise alone made him nervous.
Joshua rolled a ball towards him. "Easy."
Caleb nodded. The ball reached him. He swung his leg. Missed completely. The ball continued rolling. A few boys nearby giggled.
Heat rushed into Caleb's face. The familiar feeling returned. The feeling that whispered: You're not good enough. You should stop. You should sit down. You should leave.
Caleb stared at the grass. His confidence began shrinking.
Joshua jogged over and retrieved the ball. No teasing. No laughing. No sighing. He simply placed the ball back in front of Caleb. "Again."
Caleb frowned. "What if I miss?"
Joshua shrugged. "Then you miss."
"What if everyone laughs?"
Joshua smiled. "They probably will."
Caleb looked horrified. Joshua started laughing. "That's how learning works."
The next attempt wasn't much better. Neither was the one after that. Or the one after that.
Still, Joshua never gave up. Day after day, he encouraged Caleb. Pass. Kick. Trap. Repeat. Pass. Kick. Trap. Repeat.
Little by little, things began to change. The ball no longer felt like an enemy. His feet slowly learned what to do. The fear became smaller. The confidence grew larger.
One afternoon, Joshua passed him the ball during a game. A player ran towards him. Caleb remembered what Joshua taught him. Keep your eyes up. Stay calm. Trust yourself.
He tapped the ball sideways. The other player missed. Joshua's eyes widened. "Nice!"
Caleb grinned. A second player approached. This time Caleb passed the ball straight to Joshua. Joshua kicked. GOAL!
Cheers erupted around the field. Joshua raced over and wrapped an arm around Caleb's shoulders. "See?"
Caleb couldn't stop smiling. The goal belonged to Joshua. The victory felt like his too.
For the first time, he understood something important. Being brave didn't mean you weren't scared. Being brave meant trying anyway.
The final bell rang. Children began returning to their classrooms. Joshua and Caleb walked side by side. Their conversation drifted from football to lunch to what they wanted to be when they grew up.
Neither boy noticed the older student standing near the basketball court. His arms were folded. His eyes followed them carefully. A slow smile crept across his face. The smile never reached his eyes.
Across the field, Wolfie stopped walking. The husky's ears twitched. Something felt wrong. A feeling he couldn't explain.
The older boy turned and disappeared around the corner. Wolfie continued staring long after he was gone.
Trouble was coming. The husky could feel it.
And somewhere in the school, a bully named Benny had just found his next target.
To be continued...
