RIGHT ATTITUDE TO LEARNING
How can the right attitude help your child in the learning process?
School these days can be tough for students, with all homework, co-curricular activities, extra remedial classes and online learning. It is easy to get buried under the mountain of work, leaving students feeling overwhelmed and stifled. They need all the support they can get and the best thing a parent can do to assist their child is to build positivity into their lives.
Having a positive attitude towards learning is an important factor. Positivity impacts many areas, including self-perception and perception of circumstances. A positive child tend to lean towards being the best version of themselves as they have confidence in their current ability as well as their ability to be better. This will create a ripple effect as children with a positive attitude will believe they can overcome any challenges in their learning.
As a parent, you are in the front line of their education journey and you are the one children look up to. As the saying goes, “actions speak louder than words”, being a good role model for children is the best way to impart life lessons and skills. Children learn by watching and imitating the action of their parents.
You can start by creating a happy and peaceful environment at home, and showing appreciative words and gestures like hugs. If the child is good at something, encourage them and let them explore further. This will increase their confidence and sense of worth. As a parent, you can reward their efforts when they successfully overcome their challenges to be better at something. Sometimes, the process of learning a new skill may not turn out to be as smooth or successful as one might have hoped. Children may feel helpless or insecure about the challenges. Parents should encourage them to maintain a positive outlook and learn from their mistake. Instead of focusing on the setback, help children shift their focus to appreciating the lessons learnt and wisdom gleaned, and how they can do better moving forward. This will help them maintain a positive outlook.
By showing children how to maintain a positive attitude towards life and learning, they will have a strong role model to emulate, and this will in turn propel them towards adopting a better attitude in learning. Afterall, you are your child’s biggest hero.
