House of Hows

Built on a belief that every child can succeed

From a single tutor in Bedok to one of Singapore's most trusted tuition centres, this is how House of Hows came to be, and why we still teach the same way we did on day one.

It started with one frustrated question

Before House of Hows existed, Laura Oh spent years teaching students who had been told, in one way or another, that they simply "weren't good" at Maths, Science, or English. She kept noticing the same pattern: the moment a student was taught in a way that matched how they actually thought, the "weakness" disappeared.

In 2017, that observation became House of Hows, a tuition centre founded in Bedok, Singapore with a small group of students and a simple rule: no question is a stupid question, and no child is taught until they truly understand, not just until they can repeat the answer back.

What began as one tutor with an unorthodox teaching style has since grown into one of Singapore's most trusted tuition centres in Bedok, recognised by The Straits Times as a top tutor five years running, and featured across major Singapore media outlets including The Business Times, The New Paper, Money FM 89.3, and Channel NewsAsia.

From one classroom to a Bedok institution

2017

House of Hows is founded

Laura Oh starts tutoring a handful of Bedok students out of a simple conviction: the problem is never the child's ability, it's how they are being taught.

Early years

Word spreads across Bedok

Parents refer parents. Class sizes stay deliberately small, 6 to 10 students, so every child is taught, not just supervised.

A turning point

In-house counselling is introduced

Laura notices that many students who were 'weak' academically were actually anxious, discouraged, or afraid to ask questions. House of Hows becomes one of the only tuition centres in Singapore to offer counselling support alongside academic tuition.

Recognition

Featured by national media

The Straits Times names Laura a top tutor five years running. The Sunday Times, The Business Times, The New Paper, Money FM 89.3, and Channel NewsAsia all feature House of Hows' approach to education.

Today

1,000+ families and counting

House of Hows has grown into one of Bedok's most trusted tuition centres, with a 90% student achievement rate across Primary, Secondary, and Junior College levels, while still holding onto the same small-class, student-first philosophy it started with.

The values behind every lesson

Understanding over memorisation

We would rather spend an extra ten minutes helping a student truly understand a concept than rush through the syllabus and hope it sticks.

Emotional well-being first

A stressed, discouraged child does not learn well no matter how good the teaching is. Our in-house counselling exists because we treat this as a fact, not an afterthought.

Community, not a classroom factory

Small class sizes mean our tutors know each student's name, strengths, and struggles, not just their test scores.
